Reproducible freeze on Ubuntu 16.04 desktop with nvidia 387.34

I'm using IntelliJ IDEA java IDE, and every time that I try to change the debug console to windowed mode, everything becomes unresponsive. The mouse cursor moves, but neither clicking nor keyboard input has any effect.
Changing the debug console to windowed mode switches it from an embedded panel to a separate window. I can see the new window rendered, sometimes semi-transparently, and then the desktop is unresponsive. I'm suspecting some setting (in compiz?) that isn't compatible with my nvidia drivers, but don't want to start making changes that might make things worse. If there are any "special effects" like transparent windows that could be the culprit, I'd gladly disable these for system stability.
Where can I look to pinpoint the cause of the problem?
