Sound stutter + slow down

Every so often my Ubuntu 16.04 (host Windows, I use VB) sound starts to stutter, and I think I noticed slow down in performance when this happens. It is kind of driving me mad now... I have tried so many ways to fix this to no avail. I have noticed something strange lately, when it starts to stutter, if I go and open sound settings it disappears. Almost always. Sometimes I have to switch the Audio Output for the desirable effect (Analogue Output/No Amplifier or Analogue Output/Amplifier). But this is too much for me too, every 2 mins to open the sound settings. Wondering if anyone experienced this, and how to fix it?
thanks
