I don't have a fix for you but I had a old Dell desktop, I decided to put 17.10 and Kodi on it to use as a media server. I got 17 installed did the first reboot after taking out the USB drive and got a black screen. Fig it was driver's and used the built in vga connection. I messed with driver's and downloads for hours. Somehow during that install and reboot my almost new Nvidia GeForce 610 video card got fried, so I put in a Nvidia 833 card in. 2 days later it was dead. I now have to use built in VGA and 16.04. and it's fine.
I also had problems with a new hp prodesk 600 g2 mini. I played with it for hours getting the right intel driver's.
