I tried to update guitarix from Ubuntu repository, but the guitarix package fails to install in Ubuntu Studio 17.10.

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/guitarix_3%3a0.36.1+git20180310v5_amd64.deb:
trying to overwrite '/usr/lib/libgxwmm.so.0.1',
which is also in package libgxwmm0 0.35.6-1

What's the problem and how can I fix it?

Looks like you try to install the version from KxStudio repository. To do so, you must first un-install all guitarix related packages:

guitarix
guitarix-common
guitarix-doc
guitarix-ladspa
guitarix-lv2
gxw-glade
libgxw-dev
libgxw0
libgxwmm-dev
libgxwmm0

after that you could install the version from KxStudio.
Reason is a package format mismatch.

You need to run jackd with real-time (rt) privileges. To do so you need to give your user the permission. check out:

    • what is the output of ulimit -r -l -m

    • kirby@kirby-Aspire-ES1-433:~$ ulimit -r -l -m real-time priority (-r) 0 max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited kirby@kirby-Aspire-ES1-433:~$

    • so something is wrong with your permission settings, ` real-time priority (-r) 0` means you ain't have permission to use rt scheduling, you need to edit your /etc/security/limits.d/99-realtime.conf file. Check if exist with ls /etc/security/limits.d. Maybe it's called audio.conf or whatever.conf. Edit it with a texteditor as root (sudo) so that it contain @realtime - rtprio 99 @realtime - memlock unlimited

I found how to fix it. Read in Ardour manual that I needed to add myself to the audio group:

     sudo usermod -a -G audio YOUR-LOGIN-NAME

    now guitarix works OK

so something is wrong with your permission settings, ` real-time priority (-r) 0` means you ain't have permission to use rt scheduling, you need to edit your /etc/security/limits.d/99-realtime.conf file.

I'd be amazed if that resolved your APT error. Maybe your question is not about your real problem
