  • What is the function of the list of loop devices? [duplicate]

    1 answer

Whenever I open my file browser, there are a these loop devices, I don't know what they are, I tried to look up but I didn't understand what they are. They keep increasing every so often, I haven't seen the frequency of this but I know there weren't as many loop device directories before.
My question is, should I get rid of them? Should I just let them be?

Thanks for the help.

Using snap for package management will leave loop devices around.

There is a Wikipedia Article about loop devices.
In general they are used for mounting disk-images.

  • Does not explain what these particular loop devices are and why there are so many of them - I have dozens, with names of applications I have never even touched (eg gnome-characters, gnome-calculator - I promise I never have and never will use these programs). Also it doesn't answer whether he can / should get rid of them. Also it is not a duplicate of karel's question: in most situations the user has not installed anything, but 19 of these stupid snaps pre-exist in Ubuntu 18.04.
