I recently switched to Ubuntu, and was having issues with my computer freezing on the desktop wallpaper, after login. I switched to using the current NVIDIA driver to fix this issue. It worked fine for a while, but recently after installing some automatic updates I have been unable to run a graphical java app without it causing Xorg to consume 100% of my CPU and slow my PC to an unusable pace (the cursor does not update positions for over a second). I have ran that app in the past with no issues. I am able to run it again with no issues if I switch back to the Xorg driver, however, in that case I can only boot in recovery mode otherwise I won't get past login. I have tried switching between versions 384, 387 and 390 of the NVIDIA driver to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and the "Xorg driver" I have tried using is the Nouveau (X.org X Server) driver that was included with Ubuntu.

I just got an error saying Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in raise() when I switched back to Xorg and booted in recovery mode. Also am failing to install some launchpad packages when I attempt to repair broken packages.

What version of Ubuntu are you running? Have you tried with Wayland and Nouveau also? Please include these details in your post, thank you.

Ok. I have edited the question to include that information.

Also after running top again it looks like compiz is contributing significantly to the slowdown (it also is consuming around 100% of the CPU).

Does it happen for all Java programs or just one?
