ipmitool, sysfs and libsensors dependencies

I can see fans speeds in the ipmtool sdr output, but I don't see them in the /sys hierarchy (may be, I didn't look carefully enough). But - I can find everything the libsensors library shows me in the /sys hierarchy, so this library seems to be unnecessary.
My question is - what depends on what? Does the libsensors library get all its data from the /sys filesystem? What about the ipmitool?
I suspect that the BMC is the source of data for all three - could you please confirm that?
(I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 4.4)
