Unable to record sound in Ubuntu 16.04

I have a dual boot system, where on Windows I can both play and record audio, but on Ubuntu I can only play it but not record. My laptop model is Acer Aspire VN7-592G-750P, sound card is HDA Intel PCH.
Input level in my sound settings is always shown as zero:
I upgraded linux kernel to 4.16.9 and went through steps in Sound Troubleshooting Procedure, they didn't seem to help.
Here is the diagnostic output from Step 4 and here is the output from alsa-info.sh.
