  • What is the proper way of creating installation media from Ubuntu iso?

    6 answers

  • How do I install Ubuntu?

    2 answers

I purchased an HP laptop with FreeDOS on and want to install Ubuntu. I downloaded the ubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso and followed the instructions on how to burn a bootable DVD. However, the laptop will not boot from this disc (after changing settings in the BIOS to boot from DVD)

There are only 10 folders: .disk, boot, casper, dists, EFI, install, isolinux, pics, pool, preseed and 2 files mdsum.txt and README.diskdefines. Am I right in assuming that there should also be some kind of .inf autorun and install.exe files which should start the install process? If so, they appear to be missing from the iso file.

I also downloaded the Kubuntu iso and this only had the same files. I am also using PowerISO and can see the iso contents. Any ideas on how to proceed. I am new to Ubuntu and would really like to get it up and running.

This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please ask a new question.

  • Ubuntu install DVD does not have any autorun or install.exe. Those are for Windows.

  • @user68186, The OP does not ask about how to create Live USB installation media. It is about creating DVD, so it is not duplicate of the above-mentioned link.

  • @Jeff, It seems your DVD was not created properly. If your laptop can boot from USB, you may want to follow user68186's suggestion: "What is the proper way of creating installation media from Ubuntu iso?"

  • You do not run from Windows, but reboot system. If newer UEFI boot system, you should get two boot options, one UEFI:name and one name (BIOS) where name is DVD label. If just FreeDos, you may want to partition in advance, or you can partition during install. Do not use Full drive options unless willing to erase entire hard drive. askubuntu.com/questions/743095/… & help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI & you can skip Windows parts: askubuntu.com/questions/221835/…
