I used my Windows laptop to download a few (40) movies and put them on a flash drive. I cannot open the USB drive on Ubuntu to access those files.

You need to give us more details. What happens when you try to use the USB drive on Ubuntu? Please edit your question, and include any error messages you receive, verbatim.

  • Once you can see the files, copy them to your local drive, and then play them with vlc videolan.org/vlc/index.htmlwhich you can get from the Ubuntu Software Center app wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter . To solve your problem, please do sudo fdisk -l > listsudo then come back, click on edit above and add the contents of listsudo to your original question.

  • Did you take a look in /media/ or /mnt/? It doesn't sound like it's not opening a directory, sound more like you haven't mount the thumb drive. Also what file system is the usb drive formated to? NTFS? Use lshw and show us the output
