Can load and play DVD+R discs only

I just loaded Ubuntu 16.04 onto a Toshiba C75D-B laptop. I updated and upgraded apps after installation. It will not play, nor appear to recognize, CDs. With DVD-Rs, I get "Error mounting/dev/sr0 at/media..." (then names on the disc, I think they are file names) and further down on the error notice ".../dev/sro; can't read super block." It seems to play data and video DVD+Rs OK, but the sound is at reduced volume, even with volume levels at peak.
I'm a complete newbie to Ubuntu and how it works. This has me stymied. Any suggestions?

This is probably a hardware problem with the drive. Do these failures currently happen on other OSes?
