Touch and drag stops working intermittently

I'm running pretty much vanilla (GNOME) 17.10 on a thinkpad X1 tablet.
Occasionally, after maybe 45 minutes or an hour of used, touch-and-drag stops working. I can still tap things on my touchscreen to click on them, but if I try to e.g. scroll by dragging my finger, nothing happens (in any application). evemu-record still shows movement of my finger touch point in this situation. Occasionally, after maybe another 15 minutes, I can drag again, but this usually only lasts briefly and then I am back to using the scroll bar.
I upgraded my kernel through ukuu to 4.14.15, which solved some other problems I was having. However, now I still have a similar problem, and in addition, my digital pen input will randomly stop working. Now when the problem happens the digital pen moves the cursor around when I hover it over the screen, but when I touch the screen it doesn't register any clicks or pressure. I can move the cursor around with it, but that's basically it. When this happens I seem to lose the ability to click with any other input source as well.
Any ideas about how to debug further, or what the cause could be? (my guess is just that the hardware is a bit too new and not fully supported by the kernel yet).
