Keyboard and mouse stop working shortly after login

I have just installed Ubuntu on an old laptop.
The laptop is old but works fine. I added a new hard drive recently. It doesn't have Windows installed.
This is the first time I have installed Ubuntu; I did it from a USB drive. It all went fine and seemed very straightforward.
Once I completed setting it up, connected to the internet and set the password, it opened and a second later the keyboard and mouse stopped working.
I switched off and logged on again. The mouse and keyboard are working when I input my password. But then they stop working.
The laptop is HP pavilion and the Ubuntu version is 16.04.
Any help or guidance on a step by step fix would be greatly appreciated
