I am new to Linux, using Ubuntu 17.10 (64 bit) and Gnome 3.26.2. It has all consistently been kept updated.

I could not attach folders or files to the dash (or launcher or dock - it seems to have different names..?) so tried to leave them on the desktop. In the Files menu they appear in the Desktop folder, and they can be seen on the desktop itself. Files behave as expected: I can open and move them around on the desktop, and I can resize them. Folders also open and resize, but if I try to move them the cursor becomes a 'fist', and everything flies off the screen to the left - including the Rubbish Bin (which does not appear in the Desktop folder) and will not return until I reboot. Sometimes I also receive an error message saying "Sorry, Ubuntu 17.10 has experienced an internal error."

I have read many questions relating to disappearing files and folders, but none seems to match this exactly. They led me to the Gnome Tweak tool, and this helped me solve one or two other queries, but ensuring the Show Icons button was on has made no difference. If I create a new folder on the desktop it behaves the same way. Can anyone identify what is amiss?
