Lubuntu 17.10 system, installed originally without EFI. Latest update (5 Feb 2018) installed grub-efi-amd64, grub-efi-amd64-bin and set my ROM to boot in secure mode.

There is no EFI partition so the machine wouldn't boot and I had to go into the ROM and set it back to insecure mode.

Why did EFI get installed? How to prevent this in the future?

Thanks.
