Extending displays freezes computer on Lubuntu

I've just installed the newest Ubuntu Artful Aardvark LXDE only to find that ARandR and Monitor Settings both fail to extend the displays onto the second monitor properly. It will automatically mirror. But every time I try to extend the display the computer freezes and stops accepting inputs. The mouse will move but won't click and no keyboard shortcuts work.

Anyone got any ideas where to start? I'm using an old Toshiba Satellite so I figure it might just be a feature that'll never work again.
