VirtualBox seamless mode shows guest's wallpaper in the transparent section of window margin

On Ubuntu 16.04 with gnome-metacity, I noticed a strange behaviour when activating the seamless mode: a margin around windows which should be transparent now contains a part of guest's wallpaper as in this screenshot
non-transparent margins.
Metacity version is 3.18.7.
I have a similar setup with ubuntu 14.04 and metacity 2.34.13
where everything works fine.
I would be grateful if anyone could suggest a solution to this rather not serious but annoying problem.
