I am trying to install Ubuntu onto my laptop as a secondary operating system.

specs:
MSI GE63VR Raider
OS: Win10
Ver:1709
Build: 16299.371

ISO: Ubunto-18.04-desktopamd64.iso (also tried Ubuntu-16.04.4-desktop-i386.iso)
Drive: FujiFilm 32GB USB3.0

Software: Rufus (as well as PowerISO)

The issue I am having is when I open up Rufus and I set everything up properly, (i.e. MBR partition scheme for BIOS and UEFI, FAT32 or NTFS, etc.....) when I go to select the ISO image, the image is not selectable at all. It doesnt even show up as an option.I verify that bthe image is indeed in the correct location and i have even duplicated location and it still does not appear.

I tried starting with the image itself and tried mounting it to the USB drive and when I attempt that, there are no available drives to select.

Please someone help me. I am very technically proficient and even this stumps me.

  • Did you change the "Create a bootable disk using" option from FreeDOS to ISO image?

  • Be mindful that Rufus is running as Administrator when you launch it, therefore as a different user than your regular one. It is therefore possible that the file's permission are set to only grand access to your user and not Administrator, which would explain your issue. What happens if you run Windows File Explorer as Administrator? I suspect you will probably find that your ISO is not accessible... The other possibility is that you switched to DD Image mode in Rufus instead of ISO Image in which case only image files will be listed (but you can select *.* to list all files).

  • Thank you for the reply. I did select ISo instead of DD Image. As far as administrator, It prompts me for admin credentials upon applicationstartup and I even right clicked and selected "Run as Administrator" to ensure. I even logged into the administrator account and its still the same thing. No ISO files visible. in fact. most of the folder are not visible except just a few.
