Connection issues with Ubuntu 16.04 dual boot with Windows 10 for wifi on a protected network but not a home network

I'm having trouble connecting to a private network at my university but not on my home wifi. I only have this problem on my Ubuntu 16.04 partition which is dual booted from Windows 10. The IT department wasn't able to help and they think it is a hardware setting caused by Windows 10. I have no issue with Windows for connecting to this network. I have a rtl8723be wireless card if that makes a difference.
Thanks
