Ubuntu 16.04 completes boot only without display manager

I have made a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 from Ubuntu minimal iso image and I selected to add to the installation process only the Xubuntu minimal package. Apart from that, I have installed only the HWE stack and the AMDGPU-PRO 18.10 driver.
The system worked fine for a week and after that started to stuck in the boot process. Some time only with a blinking cursor, some time with a message like /dev/sda2: clean, 121539/6234222 files, 1053787/24914550 blocks
, some time only with a full black screen.
I was able to start a recovery session and I did anything, but the issue remains. At the boot, I was also able to enter a terminal session and start a graphical session with the startx
command. In this case, the system worked fine without issue. So, I also tried to use GDM instead of LightDM, but the result was the same and the system stuck on boot.
In the end, I removed all the display managers and now I can boot fine to a terminal session, I can enter with my user and I can launch the graphical session with startx
command. And the system works without any issues in the graphical session.
Any idea on how to restore a functional display manager?
