I have two users on my computer (ubuntu linux 16.04) and I want to be able to have them both logged in at the same time on different virtual consoles.

I have followed instructions here but the process fails.

This is what happens:

  1. I boot my computer and login with my main user

  2. I switch to virtual console 1 with ctrl+alt+F1 and login with my second user.

  3. I run the command startx gnome-session -- :1 vt8

  4. The screen turns black and nothing happens

What I am able to do from here is this:

  • I can switch back to my main login with ctrl+alt+F7

  • I can switch to virtual console 8 where the screen is black

  • I can switch to virtual console 9 and above where I am met with a blinking input cursor

  • I can switch back to virtual console 1 where the output below is show

What can be the problem with getting the second user on virtual console 8? I know this has worked at least one time in the past.

Here is the output visible in virtual console 1
