Have tried installing 18.04 and 16.04 on Lenovo Y520, I can boot up but not much else.
I can not run most commands without freezing, although dmesg
yields some Nouveau errors. But I can't look into or solve those errors.
Top shows a kworker
process using 100% CPU, and then sometimes a grep
process also using 99% CPU. But after running this command it freezes.
I made multiple 18 USB sticks and none of any installers could successfully shutdown.
My thought is the graphics card 1050TI is the culprit, but I can't run any commands to test it. What can I try next?

You could try to update the BIOS/UEFI to the latest version. I'd also try to boot with thenomodset
option

with a LiveUSB and updated grub. Seems to be the magic fix - fingers crossed. I can't thank you enough!
