I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Linux, so here goes.

When I launch minecraft (just by opening the .jar file) I get the following output in the launcher:

Bootstrap (v5)

After an internet search, I saw that a lot of people have had this problem and have solved it but none of the solutions seem to work:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer

or

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ca-certificates-java

I don't think that my firewall is enabled, either, though I am not sure how to check this.

I've tried Openjdk 7 and 11, and Oracle Java 8 Runtime

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 with KDE through crouton (on a chromebook).

I'm aware that downgrading to an older version of Ubuntu might work, but I would like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks in advance!

  • Oracle's Java 7 is past end-of-life, so Oracle removed the download and you can't install it anymore. It's either Java 8 (LTS) or 10 (non-LTS) if you want Oracle Java. I use 10 and 10 doesn't work for sure.
