After gdm3 reinstall every use os Settings causes new login screen

After a massive mess-up with my gdm3 settings I reinstalled gdm3 using a live USB and chroot which cleared up all problems except one.
When I go to "Settings" it drops to a User Login screen, rather like a Russian Matrjroscka doll - I went to 3 levels of login before breaking off. I then set up a virgin user from the command line and copied over all the usual (dot) settings .gconf, .local etc into the affected user /home directory, to no avail.
Any tips, anyone??
