How can I display desktop items only on the primary display?

I have 2 displays and an Ubuntu 18.04 system (gnome3-shell). The second is below the first and I would like to keep it that way. However, this seems to cause the desktop to think that its first column for desktop items is longer (extended by the second display) than it actually is.
I would like there to be only desktop items on the primary display. How can I do this?
