I just installed Kubuntu 18.04 on a 64GB partition and the installation was performed without a SWAP partition in the same HD as apparently, Kubuntu uses a SWAP file instead. The machine has 64GB of RAM memory. However, after 1:30hs using a 3D software in Kubuntu, the machine crashed and every time that I reboot now I just see a black screen with the mouse cursor on the middle, I can move the cursor but nothing happens.
Here is the machine config:
- i7 4.2 Kabby Lake
- 64gb RAM
- 250gb SSD (Win10 and Kubuntu18.04 installed with no swap partition)
- GTX 1080ti
- 850w PSU
That said:
do I need to create a SWAP partition even though the machine has 64GB of RAM and re-install Kubuntu 18.04?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Did you install Nvidia drivers?

I think @Pilot6 is probably on the right track here - black screen but with the mouse cursor showing sounds like a graphical issue. nVidia's proprietary closed-source drivers for their graphics cards have been known to have issues from time to time. I think you should be able to start Kubuntu in Recovery Mode from the advanced options in the Grub menu (choose recovery then just resume)- this should get it to boot up without the graphics drivers running, and will give you a chance to look about and see what seems to be going wrong.

As far as the swap file versus swap partition goes - I don't think that should be an issue. Ubuntu (and it's variants) should run fine with a swap file instead of the more traditional swap partition. With 64GB of RAM available I'd be surprised if you were really taxing the swap file/partition at all, (though I don't know how much system resources are taken up with your 3D software work). I'd try and see if it wasn't a graphical issue first.

Switch to another tty. (ctrl+alt+f5, or clt+alt+5) You should find a non-gui terminal everywhere but tty7. Usesudo apt-get install --fix-broken --assume-yes

First, thanks for the info again. So, @Pilot6, yes i installed the nvidia driver through the installation. I use Houdini on my 3D work and it was working perfectly, very fast too. After checking the info here, i started Kubuntu in recovery mode chose the option dpkg to fix broken packages and then ran the sudo apt-get install command. The machine rebooted in Win automatically and when i restarted once again and booted to Kubuntu, the login window showed up normally. Now, i'm facing another issue. Apparently, i'm running low in HD space (64gb partition) even though i only have Houdini installed
