Can't Access Automatically Mounted LUKS Volume with User Account

I have a BTRFS filesystem layered on top of a LUKS partition on an external drive. When the drive mounts, it doesn't allow me access. It only allows access to the root user. How do I set the drive so when it automatically mounts, it allows me access?
I'm familiar with using the mount options uid=1000,gid=1000 in /etc/fstab. However, I was wondering if I could get away without using /etc/fstab because I like the drive popping up on my desktop. Also, I'm not sure where I would get the UUID from if I had to add an entry to /etc/fstab, since I know it wouldn't be the partition UUID.
