I upgraded from Ubuntu 16.04 on my ASUS X201E laptop to Ubuntu 18.04, but now I can boot only with the Ubuntu 16.04 kernel (4.4). I can't seem to boot with the kernels 4.14, 4.15, or, 4.16.

After booting with kernel 4.4, the Ubuntu 18.04 desktop successfully loads.

Any help getting one of the newer kernels working would be highly appreciated!

  • What do you mean by "unable to boot"? Exactly what happens?

  • Please file a bug using ubuntu-bug linux-image-generic (or whatever kernel APT package you might have switched to in 18.04). Include many more details about what happens before and during the failure to boot with 18.04’s kernel. Include the output of apt policy linux-image-generic and include the output of uname -a while using the 16.04 kernel.

Also, to protect the 16.04 kernel from deletion, boot with the 16.04 kernel, and run sudo apt-mark hold linux-image-$(uname -r) linux-image-extra-$(uname -r). Replace hold with unhold after booting from the 16.04 kernel once an 18.04 kernel works to stop protecting it from deletion.
