Ubuntu and windows freeze after upgrade from ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04

I just upgraded from ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04. After the update the grub menu was gone (is not the first time that happens to me) so I tried to boot manually from an efi file.
I can access the grub manually and boot to Ubuntu but it freezes in the purple screen and I didn't find the original efi file so I can only boot from the grub (not sure if the problem is the grub or the efi file). As for windows I can boot from the grub or from the efi file but it just freezes in the windows logo. This makes me assume the grub or efi files are not the problem but still I haven't found a solution.
