Can't login, âÂÂAuthentication Errorâ after trying to login after system locks, fresh Ubuntu 18.04

After my desktop locks for the first time after my original login, I cannot unlock it again, it says "Authentication Error" even though I am positive I have typed my password correctly. It happens every time the desktop locks. The only way to get back into the desktop I've found is to login via ssh and reboot my computer.
I have not switched my keyboard to other languages. It's still the standard English (non international) keyboard.
Has anyone else had this issue?
This is a clean Ubuntu 18.04 install
login 18.04 authentication
