System won't suspend on a 2014 MacBook Pro on lid close

Googling around, the most common advice was to edit /etc/systemd/login.conf and change the relevant lines to say suspend; however, this still doesn't solve the problem. Closing the lid does absolutely nothing; the screen doesn't shut off and the machine still remains warm. How can I tell if the lid switch is working? I'm running 17.10, with the desktop changed to stock GNOME.

Can you check that your MacBook is going into suspend when you manually choose suspend? The 'suspend button' is slightly hidden in the system menu in the top-right corner of the screen. You can longpress the 'power off' menu option or hold down the Alt key and click the power off icon to suspend. (You can also press Super key & type in 'suspend'). This will narrow it down to either a problem with the 'Suspend on lid close' setting, or the lid switch not being recognised or broken.
