second screen not recognized

I'm new here and this is my first question..
I have an hp laptop with a AMD Radeon HD 8330 graphic card and ubuntu 16.04. I found an old screen that i wanted to plug in. It is VGA and my laptop only has HDMI so i bought a converter, but it doesn't recognize the second screen. also, in the system options it does not recognize the screen.
when i switch it on it's going back to sleep straight away. but i would really like it to work.
i would be so happy, if someone could help me :)
