I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 running Ubuntu 16.04. See the partial inxi output for more detail:

System: Host: Dell Kernel: 4.13.0-32-generic x86_64 (64 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 (Gtk 2.24.28)
Distro: Ubuntu 16.04 xenial
Machine: System: Dell (portable) product: XPS 15 9560
Mobo: Dell model: 05FFDN v: A00 Bios: Dell v: 1.7.0 date: 12/15/2017
Audio: Card Intel Device a171 bus-ID: 00:1f.3
Info: Processes: 258 Uptime: 17 min Memory: 1992.3/32018.9MB Init: systemd runlevel: 5 Gcc sys: 5.4.0
Client: Shell (bash 4.3.481) inxi: 2.2.35

As to be seen in this output, there is a builtin audio device and it used to work, but after a (failed) attempt to install a better audio driver to get VirtualBos audio to work without crackling, this device is now somehow not accessible anymore.

Further output:

nessi@Dell:~$ lspci
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device a171 (rev 31)
nessi@Dell:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...

The device is not visible in PulseAudio Volume Control. Any other audio device (attached through USB), e.g. the port replicator's throughput to an HDMI device works just fine.

I'm not sure whether some secure boot, acpi, grub or other setting is correct or tampers with this confiduration. This is where I coud use some input/help ;)

I tried to find info on this subject, but at least I was not able to find any information/solution that would fit my problem. In case I missed that, please be so kind and just provide the link and accept my apologies.
Many thanks in advance to anyone who read this an outs in an effort.

If I need to provide anymore info about the system, please let me know.

Cheers!
