16.04 does not recognise my DVD drives

I recently built-up a new PC and loaded 16.04 off a USB drive because I didn't have a DVD drive for it at the time. Since then I've fitted a couple of DVD drives but while they run when a disk is loaded and the LED shows for 5 to 10 secs. it then goes out and there is nothing. I read on another site that the Dev folder should have a number of CD*** or DVD*** or SR*** files but there are none on my system.

I thought that I may have a drive problem so I fitted one from another PC running 16.04 where it all works fine but that drive responded exactly the same. The only thing I can think of is that the required files were not loaded as there were no drives fitted at the time of installing Ubuntu. I've thought about to formatting the HDD and start over again this time with the DVD drives fitted, but then who knows if that will work and I'd really rather not have to do that if at all possible.

Any suggestions that you may have would be very welcome.
