recently after upgrading to UbuntuBudgie 18.04, I have come across an odd dependency error in both Spotify's terminal install and Ubuntu software install. When adding the PPA from the website and echoing it, there is no problem. but upon install is where things begin to break.

This is the error message I receive:

 isaac@isaac-Z97-D3H:~$ sudo apt-get install spotify-client
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
spotify-client : Depends: libcurl3 but it is not going to be
installed
Recommends: libavcodec-ffmpeg56 but it is not installable or
libavcodec-ffmpeg-extra56 but it is not installable or
libavcodec54 but it is not installable or
libavcodec-extra-54 but it is not installable
Recommends: libavformat-ffmpeg56 but it is not installable or
libavformat54 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I have tried to install Libcurl through Tilix but it says it already has the newest packages:

isaac@isaac-Z97-D3H:~$ sudo apt-get install curl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
curl is already the newest version (7.58.0-2ubuntu3).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Please help, I have looked everywhere for this error but cannot find the solution.

Note: This is the only application that suffers from this on my computer

  • Before I do, is there any sources I could use for installing the .gz package with the correct lib dependencies? I just downloaded and extracted the folder. Not sure on how to proceed. (Thank you again for your help)

  • I do not know about the library, but you can try to install Spotify as snap with snap install spotify instead of using PPA.
