Cancelling while buiding from source with make - what can it lead to?

Is it safe to cancel make while it is running and do I have to do any clean-up afterwards?

Prestory: I wanted to install Node.js, the first thing I saw on the web was "compile it on your own", and so I did. Downloaded an archive, unpacked, run ./configure, run make -j4.

While make was running I opened another terminal, wrote node there, got the msg

The program 'node' is currently not installed.
You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install nodejs-legacy

and understood that I should have done this earlier. Now I am sitting and waiting for make to finish, because I have no idea if I can already start
installing the thing using apt install and if I can cancel make.

I did some googling - trying to rephrase my question in multiple ways - but found nothing.

To be certain, you'd need to look at exactly what action(s) are associated with the default target in the Makefile - but by convention, make on its own usually only creates files in the directory where it's being run - it's usually not until you execute a separate make install step that anything outside of that gets modified
