alfa AWUS036AC drivers install - no dkms.conf

I found drivers for the AFLA AWUS036AC WiFi dongle. When I downloaded the installer and ran it, the installer gave an error - that dkms.conf does not exist. I have checked and I am pretty sure that dkms.conf exists. What can I do to fix this error?
