What is "extract file mode"? Why do you think you need to install gnucash from anywhere other than the official Ubuntu repository?

There is no Configure folder, but there does appear to be aconfigure
script as well as aREADME
and anINSTALL
file. Did you successfully unpack thetar.bz2
archive?
