Why does my music hang/freeze/glitch?

I like to listen to music on my laptop when I am working. Often I face the issue of music hanging/stops/interruptions while doing simple (non compute intensive) tasks such as editing text files or browsing web. It is very annoying.
My laptop has Core-i5 450M processor and 4 GB of RAM which I think is more than decent to perform simple tasks. I am wondering what is the reason for the glitches in music playback. Is it an Ubuntu issue or my Hardware isn't fast enough?
