My computer randomly crashes in the middle of usage. It would either crash into where the screen is entirely one color (usually purple), or it would just completely reboot. If it crashes to the colored screen, the audio would still play.

I can't figure out any pattern to the crashes. It would crash at any time in the middle of any random action. I had ran a memtest and no errors were found. So far I've tried rolling back the kernel to 4.10, but the error still persists.

Computer Specs

  • OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Latest Updates)

  • DE: Unity 7.4

  • WM: Compiz

  • Kernel: 4.13 (stock Ubuntu kernel)

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770k (with intel-microcode 3.20180108.0+really2017)

  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 (with nvidia-384)

  • RAM: 16 GB

My Syslog at time of crash

  • Ubuntu does not have a 'random reboot' feature (who would want that?)...but your motherboard does indeed have such a feature to prevent overheating. Alternately, random reboots may be due to a dying power supply (generally non-laptop). Either cause may or may not be related to your video card crash. None of these hardware issues are related to Ubuntu. Your syslog shows nothing unusual - perhaps wrong time.
