Forgot my login password and can't reset it

While following the old steps of mount.... I receive password options . How can I change my password did I do something wrong . I don't know the version of my Ubuntu .I know my root password. Help pls

If you know your root's password, boot up your Ubuntu and whenever you are asked to log in, press ctrl+alt+f1 and then, log in with your root credentials. You will be asked to log in with a username, type root, and then, type the password.
Once you do that, just type passwd *your username* and you will be asked to write your new password for that user.
Hope it helps!
When i pressed ctrl +alt+f1 nothing happened. There is another option in log in menu which if you press ask your username and password i typed root and typed the password but showeed that password was wrong but it was correct
