Possible to Restore 16.04 backup onto 14.04?

I want to install Ubuntu 14.04 on a machine so that it can run some software (I haven't yet figured out if it would run on 16.04). My machine is currently running Ubuntu 16.04 and I made a backup of it using duplicity. I have this backup stored on an external HD. Is it possible to restore that backup made in 16.04 on a machine running 14.04?
