Running Ubuntu alongside Windows without installing - ISO file directly on a USB stick

I have an issue with Windows 7 and it is unlikely it will work again: after loading, it leads to the "unresponsive black screen with cursor" as many have described it, and nothing show up on display. However, I was able to access a web browser (Mozilla), which is currently the only thing that works on this computer.

I got an idea - which I've done on a different computer where Windows XP stopped working altogether - and install Ubuntu alongside, as an operating system. I used a live USB stick then.

But it was several years ago, and now that I've seen the Ubuntu website it wants the ISO file to be installed through "Rufus" or some other app, and says I can't save it directly to the USB stick.

Will it work if I just download the ISO file directly? Because I can't install or use anything but Firefox, and the "save file to" dialog is my only connection to the file system, and my idea is to save Ubuntu ISO to the USB and boot from there (at first without installing).

Could it work? Or does it not work at all without the Rufus?

Thanks.

AFAIK it's always been necessary to "burn" rather than simply save the ISO - however it should be possible with any ISO burning tool (not just Rufus - although that may be more reliable than some). See for example Bootable USB flash drive from iso using windows CMD
