Is it possible to put the Ubuntu installer on a disk partition on a second hard drive, so instead of a live USB drive, I can boot from the hard disk, and see all the options that would normally be seen when using a live USB stick?

Yes, it should work - if you're using the standard "Startup disk creator" that comes with Ubuntu, it will want to erase the entire disk, so you'll need to add any other partitions afterwards. Another option might be to actually install the system to the USB, which will allow your changes / settings to persist across reboots: askubuntu.com/questions/16988/… using unetbootin to make the USB allows you to do something aimilar, but more limited, IIRC.

  • Install Live system to USB and then clone from USB to hard drive using dd.
