Booting from MATE 16.04 on an iMac 4,1

Decided to try to install Ubuntu MATE on an antiquated iMac 4,1 (early '06 edition). I got through installation perfectly fine with the help of rEFInd, and the machine runs beautifully in Live mode off the USB drive, as intended.
However, when I attempt to boot (again with rEFInd) from the installation on the hard drive, the screen is filled with video glitches reminiscent of white noise, and crashes. With nomodeset it still has the glitches, but does start, and seems to works fine except for nothing being decipherable due to the screen trouble.
I guess my question at this point is what the installer/live disk is doing differently from the installation, if it works fine on one but not the other. I was able to get Debian to run with no graphical glitches on the same machine earlier, albeit also with nomodeset.
