I downloaded the latest Ubuntu Budgie (18.04) and installed on a generation two Virtual Machine. Everything appeared to work well until I tried to get the much hyped improved Hyper-V integrations working and realised I needed a generation 1 machine.

I then:

  1. Reinstalled Ubuntu Budgie as a Generation 1 (BIOS) machine on the same physical mapped hard disc, erasing the existing installation.

  2. Rebooted to a distorted screen after installation (akin to gif below).

  3. Turned the VM off and on again - it booted to the login screen as expected with no distortion nor issue.

  4. Logged in.

  5. Installed Vim and Git

  6. Edited /etc/default/grub, Line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=hyperv_fb:1366x768"

  7. Shutdown the machine.

Upon booting the machine I am now greeted with a distorted view. The stride appears to be out resulting in the following row of pixels being appended. Adjusting the window size has no effect on the image contained (it simply crops the result).

Further attempts to restart the machine result in the same outcome.

It should be noted that the machine appears responsive. I can type my password at the log in screen and press enter, and note the image change. (See gif)

Ubuntu Budgie in Hyper-V

Windows Version is 1709 (16299.402). Windows 10 Pro.

Is this something simple I have overlooked, a side effect of my process, or an otherwise known issue?

  • You've added video=hyperv_fb:1366x768 to the kernel command line. Try removing this.
