Multiple Chrome Icons in Status Bar

Since a recent update of Chrome, I now have an icon in the upper right corner that hadn't been there before. I don't mind a single icon, but in this case there are two.
I do use Hangouts which runs in the background so that may be behind the multiple icons, but I can't tell. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? is there a way to combine these into a single icon (or get rid of both all together). Less annoyingly but still frustrating is the weird stretched look of the icons but I think that's probably due to scaling for a HiDPI screen.
I've tried uninstalling Chrome and reinstalling it with no luck, but I'm not sure what else to try. Thank you.
