Touchpad issues after installing vanilla-gnome-desktop on Ubuntu 17.10

The touchpad was working great under standard Ubuntu 17.10, including multitouch gestures etc. I installed the vanilla-gnome-desktop package because I like standard gnome better, but this made the touchpad a little sluggish and disabled tap-to-click. Does anyone have an idea what package or setting in vanilla-gnome-desktop might be causing this and how I can revert back to the old setting? (Just to be clear, I don't want to revert back to the Ubuntu Gnome experience, I just want to revert back to the old touchpad configuration.)
For reference: I am using a 6th gen Lenovo X1 Carbon.
