Ubuntu 16.04 backup and restore

How to restore ubuntu system to previously working state may be by timestamp or something. The situation is that some system settings are changed and it got messed up. We want to restore the system to the previous working state just so we can avoid the full re-installation and setup of OS.
Any help in this is appreciated.
