I downloaded Virtualbox going in pretty much blind because I'm curious about Linux and want to have a safe environment to play around with it. I got the ubuntu iso off the website and set everything up but when I went to start the machine the first time it gave me a prompt saying it requires an x86-64 CPU and only detected an i686 and can't boot. Just wondering where I go to adjust the kernel so I can get started.

You can't adjust the kernel; it requires re-compile as does all programs on the the Ubuntu ISO you have downloaded. Your restriction is the virtual-box you are running cannot run 64 bit; so you need a different VirtualBox to run it.

Possible duplicate of Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. How can I install Lubuntu/Ubuntu?
